PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season began Thursday with Invest 91L, a low-pressure system in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico that strengthened into Tropical Depression Two, which has the potential to become Tropical Storm Arlene.
The National Hurricane Center announced the system with a well-defined center of circulation was moving south at a wind speed of 35 miles per hour. There were no watches or warnings for the Florida coast.
If Arlene forms, the tropical storm is forecast to weaken at sea as it moves south. Cuba was in the probable path of the storm’s center by early Sunday morning, according to the latest NHC track area.
There will be mostly cloudy skies for Thursday night in South Florida.
Meanwhile, Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties are scheduled to remain under a flood watch with up to 3 inches of rainfall until Friday.
The rain chances will be lower by Monday and Tuesday.
