WEST PARK, Fla. — A 62-year-old woman called 911 for help in West Park, and Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies ended up arresting her, according to records released on Tuesday.
Deputies met Elizabeth Hixson, who weighs about 500 pounds, on July 8 at her home when she accused her 67-year-old drunken husband of neglecting her and hurting her, records show.
Hixson reported that her husband had refused to help her change her foot’s bandage after drinking all day, so she was upset and there was a struggle, according to a BSO deputy’s report.
“I did observe a scratch mark,” a BSO deputy wrote in his report about Hixson’s condition. On her husband, the deputy wrote, “I did not observe any injuries to his person.”
The deputy also reported that Hixson’s husband said, “she fought him” and “she was having mental issues.” After about an hour and 15 minutes, the BSO deputy moved to arrest Hixson and not her husband.
“I went to handcuff her, she braced and pulled her hands towards her mouth and opened her mouth as if she was going to bite me. I then pulled my hand back,” the deputy wrote in his arrest report.
Fire rescue personnel also responded. The deputy reported he helped a firefighter move Hixson to a stretcher, so they could take her to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.
According to the deputy’s report, Hixson “struck” the firefighter’s hand, so the deputy accused her of felony battery domestic violence, resisting an officer with violence, and battery on a firefighter.
The deputy also noted in his arrest report that emergency services dispatchers had received at least 30 requests for help from Hixson’s home since June, and while most of them were medical calls, this was the only one for domestic violence.
Broward County court records show prosecutors filed the BSO felony case against Hixson on July 10. She faced three third-degree felony charges of battery, resisting an officer with violence, and battery on a firefighter.
