MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Well-known boxer Gervonta Davis is garnering some interest, but not for his exploits in the ring.
Davis was arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence battery and left Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Friday through the normal inmate release door.
But what was unusual was the escort he received as he walked out.
Three corrections officers, one of them guiding Davis by the arm, walked with him as reporters were kept at bay.
The scene raised questions about whether this was a form of preferential treatment.
For context, let’s look back at pop star Justin Bieber: Corrections officers were there for his walkout, as a horde of reporters and fans waited on him to bond out after his 2014 arrest for DUI.
Conversely, MMA star Conor McGregor bonded out without a corrections escort in 2019 after his arrest for smashing a fan’s phone. Those charges were later dropped.
Local 10 News reached out to the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department about their policy and procedure for bond outs, and for an interview with Corrections Director Sherea Green, as well as the mayor and several other officials, including Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero Stutz.
The sheriff’s office and state attorney’s office referred our questions to corrections, while the rest did not respond to our requests by the time of this story’s publication.
