NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — Authorities responded to reports of a shooting that involved multiple police officers in North Miami Wednesday afternoon, following what witnesses described as a police chase that ended in gunfire.
It happened in a residential neighborhood near the 500 block of Northeast 137th Street.
5 p.m. report:
According to police, it was around 4:15 p.m. when a stolen car was spotted at an apartment parking lot in North Miami, along the 400 block of 137th Street.
Miami-Dade deputies were called in for backup by North Miami police officers, and something happened that led to officers firing their weapons.
“A male subject was shot multiple times,” said North Miami Police Chief Cherise Gause. “He was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. Two North Miami officers were injured.”
Gause did not say what exactly happened before shots were fired or if the suspects were armed.
The two officers who were injured were not shot and only suffered minor injuries, police said.
Witnesses told Local 10 News that the incident may have begun with a police pursuit of a stolen car.
Authorities have not confirmed if the people in the car were armed.
They said the driver of the car pulled into a driveway and refused to stop. A woman reportedly jumped out of the vehicle, and a police officer may have been in the path of the car before shots were fired.
“I was on the balcony and I thought it was fireworks at first,” said Corey Higgs, who lives nearby. " First it was three regular shots, then I heard a loud boom and like some rapid fire."
Authorities have not confirmed what caused police officers to fire shots.
Video obtained by Local 10 News showed police pulling one man with a bloody shirt out of a car before taking him into custody. Authorities later confirmed that a second man was also arrested, but the ages and identities of both suspects were not disclosed.
Witnesses say one individual, possibly the suspected driver, may have been hit by gunfire.
Local 10 News returned to the crime scene on Thursday morning, where several bullet holes were visible in one car’s windshield.
In a community advisory, the North Miami Police Department said there is no threat to the public. Officers remain at the scene, and residents should expect a large law enforcement presence as the investigation continues.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, which is protocol for the department.
No other details were immediately released.
