According to police, the shooting was reported shortly after 5 a.m. in the area of Northwest First Avenue and Sixth Street, near the Brightline station.

Police said someone called 911 to report that a woman had been shot in her legs.

Officers and Miami Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene and the woman was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Her condition has not yet been released.

Police said as officers were setting up crime scene tape in the area, they found a man who had also been shot.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We don’t have any leads on who shot at them. We did find casings on the scene,” Officer Mike Vega said.

Police said this all happened at a homeless encampment.

“Really nice guy, dude. Very respectful, outgoing person,” James Blum, who knew the deceased victim, said. “I don’t know why something like that would happen. He was very outgoing. He was a good guy, dude. He would give the shirt off his back if he had to.”

While police have not confirmed the details about what led to the shooting, Blum told Local 10 News what he believes happened

“There was a hit out on his head because he owed somebody $1,000,” he said.

While a gun was not found at the scene, officers did find bullet casings.

Anyone who was in the area between 4:45 a.m. and 5 a.m. is asked to call the Miami Police Department or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
