US--Tropical Weather
System over Florida has potential to develop into tropical depression, weather service says
SUMMARY: A weather system moving across Florida wasn’t even a tropical something but it has the potential to develop into a tropical depression as it moves across the Gulf later in the week. National Weather Service forecasters said Tuesday that the system would be called Dexter if it becomes a named storm. The weather services says the area of low pressure off Florida’s east coast is becoming better defined and moving across the Florida Peninsula. The system is drenching the peninsula with heavy rains, and the weather service is warning of the potential for flash flooding in parts of the state.

The Miccosukee Tribe of Florida wants to join a federal lawsuit against 'Alligator Alcatraz'
SUMMARY: The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida is seeking to join a federal lawsuit aimed at halting the construction of a new immigration detention facility in the Everglades, which tribal members consider their sacred ancestral homelands. Miccosukee leaders had already condemned the facility. But the filing Monday of a motion to intervene in the case initially brought by environmental groups signals a new level of opposition by the tribe, which is also a major political donor in the state. State officials rapidly built the facility, which they dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” on an isolated, county-owned airstrip inside the Big Cypress National Preserve, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of downtown Miami.

US--Florida Immigration Law
Florida attorney general identifies wrongful charges under halted immigration law
SUMMARY: At least two people have been wrongly charged under a Florida law that outlaws people living in the U.S. illegally from entering the state since a federal judge halted its enforcement. That's according to a report Florida’s state attorney is required to file as punishment for defying the judge’s injunction. The men were arrested in late May in northeast Florida’s St. Johns County. That was more than a month after U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams in Miami issued an order freezing the enforcement of the statute. The law makes it a misdemeanor for people who are in the U.S. without legal permission to enter Florida by eluding immigration officials.

FL--Florida CFO
DeSantis appoints Senate ally Ingoglia as Florida CFO
SUMMARY: Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has chosen a conservative legislative ally as Florida chief financial office. The position is a statewide elected office vacated when Jimmy Patronis ran successfully for Congress in a special election earlier this year. The new CFO is state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, a 54-year-old homebuilder and occasional professional poker player from the Tampa Bay area. Ingoglia will serve the remainder of Patronis’ term and could run for reelection in 2026. He would likely face GOP state Sen. Joe Gruters who has been endorsed by President Donald Trump. DeSantis said at a news conference Wednesday that Ingoglia would focus on issues such as property tax relief, insurance affordability and audits of local governments to uncover wasteful spending.

GLF--Woad-Turning Pro
Lottie Woad joining pro ranks in women's golf after nearly winning Evian
SUMMARY: Top-ranked amateur Lottie Woad has announced she is turning professional, two days after nearly winning a major title. The 21-year-old Englishwoman backed up her victory by six shots at the Women’s Irish Open on the Ladies European Tour on July 6 by finishing in third place and just one stroke off the pace at the Evian Championship on Sunday. She didn’t win any prize money at either tournament because she was amateur. However, her good finish at the Evian secured enough points to seal LPGA Tour membership through its Elite Amateur Pathway. It means she is ditching her college career at Florida State University with one year left.

HKN--Emergency Goalies-Rule Changes
Hockey's beloved emergency backup goalies face an uncertain future with new NHL rule
SUMMARY: The beginning of the NHL’s next collective bargaining agreement brings to an end the possibility that a former Zamboni driver or an accountant who plays beer league hockey could enter a game in the league. Emergency backup goaltenders known as EBUGs have brought some of the best feel-good stories to sports in recent years, from David Ayres beating his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs to Scott Foster winning a game for the Chicago Blackhawks. Each team will soon employ a full-time traveling goaltender to fill that role, but the rules for who qualifies leaves the net wide open for more fairytale moments.

Legacy Motor Club sues broker for alleged interference in NASCAR charter deal with Rick Ware Racing
SUMMARY: Legacy Motor Club is suing the broker who helped negotiate its purchase of a charter from Rick Ware Racing. Legacy accuses T.J. Puchyr of tortious interference for now trying to buy Ware’s NASCAR team. Legacy alleges in its filing in North Carolina Superior Court that Puchyr as a consultant for the Cup Series team owned by seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson violated the state Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act by using “insider knowledge and position of trust to interfere with Legacy’s agreement with RWR.” Legacy also accused Puchyr of making public personal attacks against Johnson when he announced last month plans to purchase Ware’s tiny race team.
