New law ends HOV lane toll exemptions

Carpool lane perks are a thing of the past in the state of Florida.

Senate Bill 1662 went into effect on July 1.

It eliminates the special privileges for low-emission and hybrid vehicles to use the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes on Florida highways.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the 95 Express LEV Toll Exemption Program will not accept new registration or renewals. Existing exemptions will remain valid until after their current expiration.

Under the program, carpools of three or more people (3+) were able to use 95 Express lanes for free once the carpool was registered with South Florida Commuter Services. Each member of the 3+ carpool was also entitled to free guaranteed ride home benefits.
